Chris Scerri is pushing to go from Preston City Oval to the AFL, with the young gun invited to train with Fremantle during the Supplemental Selection Period (SSP).
After playing for Strathmore’s under 18.5 side in 2024, Scerri received a call from Bullants assistant Rocky Iannello to join preseason training, making his VFL debut – with Rocky as acting coach – in round 1 against Footscray. He played all 18 games in 2025, receiving the W.K. Deacon Award as our best first-year player and finishing equal-fifth in the best-and-fairest count.
Speaking to CODE Sports' Paul Amy today, Scerri – who has already signed with Richmond's VFL side – said he was "a little bit" surprised at his rise.
"I thought was capable of being at that level. I needed time to adjust and take in the little things that can make you an impactful player."
Earlier this year, Bullants senior coach Rohan Welsh was full of praise for the first-year player: "He doesn’t lose contests and he's tough…really invested in the team too and trying to make the team better."
Scerri also says Iannello has "been awesome to me" and "still reaches out".
"For that Freo testing I did some one-on-one stuff with him. One of the high performance coaches at the Bullants (Damon Bednarski) helped me too. I was lucky to be with the Bullants."
If successful, Scerri would join Nick Driscoll – selected by Geelong in the rookie draft last week after a strong Northern Knights campaign and one VFL game – as Bullants players entering the AFL in 2026.
